Brandon Holland is a New Orleans-born artist whose work focuses on Blackness, environment, and kinship. Through his lens, he examines the complex relationships between people, memory, and the land, often inspired by cultural philosophies like Sankofa and Ubuntu. His photography serves as a tool for preservation and storytelling, capturing moments of resilience, joy, and connection.
Brandon’s work challenges historical narratives tied to the American landscape, offering a vision of healing and belonging. With a focus on both portraiture and environmental imagery, he highlights the beauty and interconnectedness of life and culture. His projects often explore Southern Black history, drawing from archival research and lived experience to reframe the past in conversation with the present.
His work has been commissioned by The New York Times, Mellon Foundation, the Atlantic, and the Southern Poverty Law Center, among others. Through these collaborations, he continues to document underrepresented histories and communities, ensuring their stories are seen and remembered.
Brandon’s photography appears throughout this issue.
